whats wrong with canceling a CC that still has a balance?

Say I wanted to cancel my discover acct before paying off the balance. Is this a bad thing and why?
Does it look bad on credit report? I just thought of one thing is that they will prob charge a fee for cancelling prior to paying the full balance....would they?
