Credit Card Lowered My Limit?????!!!!!!!

Hello All, I was appalled to find that my credit card limit had been lowered by $800, and that a charge I made on it put it over that limit, resulting in an overlimit fee. As of my last statement, everything was fine, then I checked my account online and found this out. I had made a couple of payments late in the last 6 months, but otherwise, no problems. Aren't they supposed to contact the debtor before making these kinds of changes? I found this forum so I would have something to go on before I contact the creditor. Please help me out, I'm stunned that they can actually do this!
