Statue of Limitations. HELP!!

I recently received a letter from an attorney claiming I bounced a check in 1995. How can they just be coming after me now? Isn't there a limit on this? Do they have to prove that the check ever existed? I truly doubt I even bounced it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
