Scott, I am as pi**ed off about it as you are, but I think you are being somewhat naive. What good would it do to call the cops? I don't have a license plate number for the vehicle, and telling the cops two guys showed up and rang the bell and knocked on the door will get me a one-page report filled out. Do you really think the cops are going to put out an APB on the basis of that? Plus, my understanding is the cops are not at all sympathetic to people who haven't paid their bills and are being harassed by bill collectors.
Rifling through the mail IS a federal crime, but the city cops won't do a thing about that. Maybe you think I should call the FBI and they'll send over a swat team? Give me a break. And turning a doorknob isn't a crime at all. If the door is unlocked, an aggressive bill collector could enter and, when the cops are called, swear he was allowed in to talk to the debtor. If you leave your door unlocked, you probably deserve to be faced with the consequences. In any event, turning the door handle is NOT a crime under the law of any state.
You are not overreacting, but you are being naive if you think the police are going to be of any help at all for what has happened so far. They will show up, of course, if someone gets hurt, after it's too late.
