Thanks, WhyChat(love your website, by the way!). Okay, I was told that since the doc's practice has dissolved, the outside agency is handling all the loose ends, there is no way to contact the doctor, nor any need to (as they said). So, I have no address for this doctor. I even called the hospital, but the doctor no longer works there. The company contacting me has taken over the billing because the original billing service has dissolved (it was an agency called Emergency Physicians Billing Service). I called our former insurance about this and they were actually kind enough to check out records they had. There was no separate claim submitted by an ER doctor for this visit, so I guess I was wrong about a doc being paid already. Anyway, I am sending out the letter to the collection agency. I spoke to someone who had something similar happen to them and he told me that the collection agency told him the same thing, that he had signed to be responsible for anything not paid by his insurance and even participating providers are not legally responsible for the billing of insurance, that it is a courtesy, but still you are personally obligated to see that all the bills are taken care of. Oh, well!!
