First thing you should always pay debts if possible. If you are in a financial bind I totally understand that paying is impossible to comprehend. I am also in the same boat and would pay if I had money to give them.

Lawsuits are a last resort. They usually attempt numerous collection effarts. The newspaper thing is not that common. The usual thing is to just transfer it to another collector.

The best way to prevent contact is to use a P.O. Box from an adjacent town or a mailbox service (like Mailboxes etc.). Be sure to ask them to not give out any personal or street address info. Changing to an unlisted phone number is also a must. But do not give it to anyone but family or friends. Any time you fill out any applications (except employment) leave it blank. Not answering out of area or private calls will deter them. Not returning VM messages from them is another must.

When the SoL is up then you are safe.
