I'm sorry, but your insurance agent is an idiot. Credit card companies writeoff millions upon millions of dollars a year because of death. All you need do is contact the creditor upon the death of the cardholder and inform them of the sad event. Some may ask for a copy of a death certificate. I've had occassion to send the death certficate plus, a copy of the obituary notice from the newspaper.
The law is clear. Unless you are joint on the account, the deceased estate pays the final expenses. No estate then everyone is out of luck. A very routine occurence.
As to pulling your credit report, illegal without a permissible purpose and what your insurance agent described is not a pp. Look at this opinion letter.

Also, if they are stupid enough to turn it over to collection agencies, post back and several will show you how stop them in their tracks.
