should I settle a charge off??

I am in the process of trying ot buy a house. My credit is not the best (middle score 598). My mortgage broker tells me I have a charge off with HSBC bank. He told me that I should try to settle with them, but it might make my score worse. The account was last paid I belive 6/1997. I live in Nevada now but lived in NY at that time. I would be greatful for any advice. Thanks.
