Help on Credit Card Debt

I live in Texas and have nine credit cards with debts approaching $40,000....Due to medical bills, etc. my wife and I have found we can't pay these...even when we were paying minimum payments we weren't reducing balances any.......now late charges, over limit fees and interest have made balances even higher......what advice does anyone have....we are five months behind on some, less on others....we get daily phone calls from the credit card companies....should we try to pay them anything at all or just let them turn over to collection agencies and get judgements...we are pretty much at wit's end on what to do next and are fearful of just throwing more money after bad in trying to pay these accounts.......any advice will be greatly appreciated.......
