So, there's no way to negotiate a settlement prior to going to court?

If there isn't any way prior to court, and this credit card account is in my husband's name, who I know will not go to court since he leaves all the bills and stuff up to me. Is there any way I can go in his stead or have a lawyer go in his stead?
