If they do win a judgement, whether or not they can take your assets will depend on which state you live in. For example, in Florida, your home is protected from all creditors except those holding a mortgage or lien on your residence, $1,000 of personal property is protected, and if you are head of household your wages cannot be garnished. Also, property that is held jointly by spouses is exempt. Do a search on the Internet for consumer services [your state] or consumer protection [your state].
