DEBIT cards -- any problem?

I owe big time on several credit cards and have reached charge off time. I have a little bit of cash in the bank that I need for ordinary living expenses for my family. I have to travel on business, and I worry about getting stuck somewhere without any means to pay for something. Some businesses won't take checks, and I no longer can use my credit cards.
I have received "debit cards" from my banks that can be used just like checks, and one of them is a "VISA debit card" issued by a bank at which I have a checking account. Can anyone think of any reason I should not use the debit card? Does debit card use show up in any way on credit reports? I would prefer to keep my checking account transactions private from the credit card companies.
