Do we need a lawyer?

I'm wondering if we should get a lawyer--or can we submit the Answer ourselves? Also on the summons, besides saying we need to serve an answer to the plaintiff, it says, "If you fail to appear and defend, judgment by default will be rendered against you...". Do we have to go to court? Or does this just mean if we fail to submit an answer? Thanks...
