Chances are good you can't settle with original creditor because the account is charged off. You absolutely do not want to settle with collection agents, that's how these syphillitic camels get their noses into peoples' tents for the rest of their lives.
Trouble getting apartment due to credit report? Maybe, maybe not, this is just another spook story told by the credit 'industry' flacks. Many times a bad report can hurt,other times not. You can always work your own arrangement with a landlord, put a few months rent on deposit, covered of course by a contract of your design.
In so doing you get off the 'credit economy' and contribute to the effort of starving these shylocks into eating their own children.
