How long do regular bills stay on credit report?

I had a problem with a house full of roommates in college, and had to forego paying off the cable, phone, electricity, and furniture bills. All these went to collection, but were never paid. How long do these type of outstanding debts stay on a credit report? This all happened in 1995-1997, I have no outstanding debt after year 2000.
