I have accumulated around 30k in CC debt throughout schooling over a 4 year period. Although I have not added any new debt in over 18 months, I have never been able to make more than minimum payments. I have even worked out a few "hardship" temporary arrangements with a few of the cards lowering the payments. However, AmEx would never work with me and all I could send them was $50. Last November, my wife lost her job and I unfortunately missed a payment to AmEx. The account was immediately charged off and sent to collections.
Luckily, my wife has found a better job and we are in a much better position financially. However, NCO sent a collection letter in early February. I ignored it for a week or two and then called AmEx to see what we could work out. They said they could not help me in any way as the account was charged off and gave me NCO's address. I then began getting call after call on my home voice mail. Every time I tried to return the call I could not get through due to the agent being "busy". I sent in a validation letter on March 11th. My father-in-law was contacted and was coerced into giving my wife's work number. This was obviously a huge mistake as NCO began calling repeatedly over a 2 day period. My wife said her employer does not allow these calls but they persisted. On the day these calls began I called the number that was given to my wife. I was unable to get a word in over the screaming (on their part). I told them I was waiting on validation to which they replied that I was "playing games". I then said that our workplaces do not allow collection calls and the lady hung up on me.
Well, I fired off a C&D letter March 14th. Now, I am getting calls that say they are from AmEx legal dept and they have to hear from me by noon of that day or they are going to "make a decision". I called AmEx and the rep told me that this call could not have come from in-house. I own a home and have been told by NCO that they are going to file a lien against it (is that so bad?) among other threats. I should mention that the amount in question is $3,000.
I now find myself at CCCS, referred there by my attorney who said nothing but good things about their program. The payment they require is $815 for all of my debts and this pays them off in an estimated 4 years. I can manage this. Can CCCS deal with NCO and should I worry about getting sued before they establish a deal? I set up the plan in 2 days. Thanks for the help. I apologize for the length, but it felt good to get this off my chest.
