Student loan collection

I have an old Student Loan (Canada) and have been contacted by a Credit Agency Stating I owe more than the original loan was! I recall paying for a couple of years and then paying the next year to bring my loan down below $1000.00.( I am actually pretty sure I paid it off but it was over 5 years ago.) The Credit Agency says I owe $7000.00 and will not verify the amount. I have tried to contact the person at Student Loans on Several occasions who wrote the account off, but my calls have not been returned. I don't want to pay something I have already paid, but cannot endure the rude phone calls from the collection agency. How can I resolve this.
