SOL Question

In January I started receiving notices from a collection agency and have ignored them because of the SOL on the debt owed. I also observed that they recently added over $3000.00 in interest to the amount owed. I had obtained a copy of my credit report late last year and the original debt was not listed. I assume that it was sold earlier this year to this new agency who started sending me nasty letters.
Should I send them a cease and desist letter or continue to ignore them. I would also like to know if I should also get another copy of my report just to see if this debt has reappeared.
