Direct Merchants Bank

My wife had sent a payment to DMB and they claim that the check was returned to them by my wife's bank because her checking acct. had been closed. My wife called her bank and her acct. is NOT closed AND the check in question was never presented to them for payment. Now my wife's CC acct. with DMB has been cancelled and she has tried to get DMB to fax her a copy of the "returned check" for proof but they refuse to do so. This sounds very sleazy. What can I do to help my wife in this case?
