I Need Help With JBC & Associates

Has anyone ever heard of this agency? They are in Bloomfield, NJ. They claim to be a law firm, but the NJ Bar has never heard of them and told me that posing as a law firm is a crime in NJ. They also told me that the matter is currently under investigation. JBC is calling about some old checks and threatening me with criminal prosecution. How can a phoney law firm be doing this? Should I pay them or wait until NJ finishes their investigation?
