Validate or not?

I'm confused as to the purpose of and when to validate. Most posts I've read say validate. However, I've also seen posts that say don't validate if you're within SOL. If you're already past SOL, why would you validate? Why wouldn't you just send an SOL letter.

I recently sent a validation letter to a collection attorney trying to collect a debt that supposedly has been sold. Since the creditor trying to collect is not someone I have ever done business with, I figured validation would be the best way to go. Did I bury myself with this one?

Thanks much for your help and advice!
