The credit reporting agencies SELL their data to collection agencies (unless you have opted out) You will see a "soft inqury" from one, then they dredge up some ancient old account of yours, or of someone with a similar name, and send you a demand for payment.and if you seem to be getting eady to appy for a mortgage, they will poison your report with a new insertion just before closing.
