1099 clarification

when you settle on a debt for less than original debt, you get a 1099 on the remainder and that is considered income on your taxes, correct??? What about 1099s that you do not settle on?? A couple came in on my late husband...after I had the taxes done of course...will these be considered income as well?? no community property state here..thanks
