We had credit problems because the company that both my wife and I work for went out of business. Since we live in a small company town, there were no jobs available until another company came in three years later, took over the building and hired most of the people who had not moved away to find work elsewhere. But in those three years, we went through a lot of harrassment from creditors who were unwilling to work with us. An attorney friend of ours suggested that we tape phone calls from creditors. We did this with an old recorder that we had and even stated ahead of time that they were being taped. Apparently they thought we were bluffing, and they said some illegal stuff to us over the phone anyway. A friend made copies for us and when we were presented a summons to go to court from these people, we gave a copy of the tapes to the judge. The judge set up a court date for these creditors to account for their illegal actions. Since the new company had already begun hiring, the case against us was dismissed with instructions to begin making payments again when we began working again. In the meantime, no interest was to be added. We are working again and our bills have been paid off. If we had not taped those conversations, we probably would have lost everything.
