When my mother-in-law lived with us, she was issued a Providian credit card even though her only income was Social Security and she owned no assets-no home, car or savings. I can't understand why they did this, other than she was an easy mark and had bad credit. She was very secretive about her finances/debts and had several cards. She gave them her checking account# and for a couple of months they cleaned out her account! By that time her bill was around $9,000! Then she changed banks and stopped answering the phone. When she eventually went into a nursing home as a Medicaid patient (lung cancer), they continued to harass my husband & I to tell her to pay her bill, even though I explained her situation. The Providian guy told me "we'll find a way to get the money". When she died after being in the nursing home for 5 months, the debt was nearly $12,000. They continued to call and send bills. I sent them a copy of her death certificate. After paying the nursing home and the funeral home, there was absolutely nothing left, which I explained in my letter to Providian. They refered the account to a collection agency in Ohio, Weiman & Weiman. They insisted that there must be some assets. I told them that children are not responsible for an indigent parent's debts. I gave her clothes and old furniture to Goodwill and am taking really good care of her cat. And they can't have him!
I hope that this is the end of the Providian saga. They are opportunistic scum :-)
