has anyone ever had aprob w/ asset acceptance

I had a debt that was charged off by discover in 1995.
Asset Acceptance purchased debt in 96 and changed the date on my credit report as occuring in 98. Is this legal? Can the same debt be listed for longer then seven yrs.? I live in Illinois. Any help would be appreciated.
