If they were able to validate and you wish to buy a house then, pay it.
They hold a lot of cards. They looked at your BF's credit report and saw the mortgage co. inquiry and realize this must be paid prior to funding. Your choice now -pay and be a homeowner or, leave it as is and keep renting.
