Question? Sherman Acquisitions, LP

In 1993 (it's now 2003), an old debt was charged-off. This same debt, I recently learned, has been sold and resold and is now owned by Sherman-Acquisitions. They have managed to re-report this very old debt back to a few of the CRAs by modifying the account number and fiddling with the account activity/open dates. Obviously this practice is, at the very least, fraudulent. I too only discovered this upon applying for a refi. My question to you is, what courses of action do I have besides the usual "dispute" with any of the big three credit reporting agencies? I'm told they can only verify and remove any items disputed, but can not stop the creditor from re-reporting on a subsequent date.

Also, am I not correct in assuming that when a compay charges off a debt they are benefitting from this loss in the form of a write off and/or insurance claim?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
