Help, quick!!

My mail just came and in it is a 1099C from CAP 1!! It states the amount and the debt cancelled 10/00. The letter states there was a snafu due to a systems error, and they didn't furnish the info with IRS during that year and to consult with my tax advisor to determine the proper reporting of the debt forgiveness on my return. It says it will be furnished this tax year. BTW, I have CA's trying to collect on this now. Any advise appreciated!! Patti
