Jennifer, I too made mistakes a while back with my credit, and am now making good-faith efforts to resolve all of my outstanding balances. I would strongly urge you NOT to send these guys any money, it will not help you. From what I can gather, the people who have made payments to these thugs have NOT received any payment receipts, and the mark will NOT come off your credit rating.
If I were you, I would try contacting the company you originally wrote the check to and see if you can take care of it that way.
Whatever you do, do not let these thugs bully you with their threats, which are VERY illegal, they are not allowed to threaten you with 'jailtime' or anything like that. This is strictly a civil matter, and they are in severe violation of FTC rules governing debt collection.
