Statute of limitations after death

I recently received a letter in the mail from a collection agency saying my brother (who died in 1997) owes $5000. I am 99% sure I took care of all of his bills at the time, and this is totally out of left field. He died in Oregon, but this debt may be from California.In two weeks it will be six years since he died. Should I wait until then to contact them, or is there a different statute of limitations for collection of debt after death?
I would truly appreciate any help.
