They certainly *can* do it, and these things may be rather automated, with a computer tape being compiled monthly with the present status of all
accounts and sent to the bureaus.
It doesn't matter
if it is the first time or the tenth time, and the general condition of your credit reports is irrelevant. You *might* try calling them up and politely asking them to change it as a gesture of goodwill, pointing out your perfect past history. (This sometimes works with first-time late payment fees.) Perhaps you could have a subtle tone of a displeased customer who could theoretically jump to another issuer if you don't get satisfaction. But they don't have to comply.
