: I recently received a letter in the mail from a credit card company saying that I owe a sizeable amount of money plus interest from 1984. I have never heard from these people before. I do not recall having this credit card (though I suppose it is possible, I was very young then) and it does not appear on my credit report. When I called to speak to them, they did have my correct SSN . It is possible that I have a judgement against me in this case, though I'm not certain. The SOL for judgements in my state is 20 yrs. Any suggestions?

It all comes down to whether or not they have a judgment. What I would suggest is calling the court house for the area where you live - or the area where you lived back in 1984, if different - and asking them how to find out if there was a judgment. Courts aren't always the most efficient places, so be prepared for some frustration. You also could try calling the credit card company, though there's no guarantee they'd be helpful. But don't assume that there MUST be a judgment just because the SOL for bringing lawsuits is long past.
