First, a third-party collection agency can continue to report the derogatory item as a "Collection Account" to the credit bureaus until the normal expiration date, and you can *not* force them to stop doing this just by demanding it or sending a "cease communication" letter. See our *Credit Problems* section (link is at left) for an explaination of the credit reporting time limit. As far as "ceasing communication," this is specified in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Section 805(c), which you can find in our *Credit Laws* section (link is at left.) You just need to send them your request/demand in writing, with something like, "As per the FDCPA, I hereby notify/request/demand that you cease communication with me on this matter." See our *Credit Problems* section for the Collection Agency FAQ, with general advice on dealing with third-party collection agencies.
Good Luck.
