Late fees on cancelled card

I cancelled a card with $700 of charges left on the card that have been diputed, but the First USA says it's a good charge. As a matter of principal I don't want to pay but can they continue to tack on a $29 late fee for years until it becomes worth it to sue? All other bills are paid on time. Can this one creditor single handedly ruin my credit?
