I hate cosigning situations. Your signature ought not to be required. Just be sure your husband can pay should the boy not be able to.
I doubt they'll rework the lease but, when it's up for renewal, and he's working, they ought not to need a cosigner.
Why on earth is he renting an apt without the means to pay the rent?
