I came across this board with much interest and wanted to share a horror story with you about hospitals, bills, workman's comp - disability and your tax refund.

In 1995 my x-husband was injured on the job and ended up with a hernia.

3 surgeries later (and still not fixed).

He is placed on disability through HARTFORD INS of NC, we lived in SC at the time. We retained an attorney.

18 months after the original injury he was awarded a small payout and he found a less physical job. The payout included a clause that the HARTFORD pay for ALL medical bills incurred from the injury date to the payoff date. 1 of these bills was to GREENVILLE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL in SC where, as driving through the town, my x-husband passed out at the wheel of the truck from the pain. I managed to get the truck off the road and then drove him to the hospital. ER Doc looked at his surgical scar from the previous surgery and REFUSED to treat him and told him to go back to the surgeon. For NO TREATMENT we got a bill of $125.

This bill was subitted to HARTFORD BEFORE the payout and again at payout.

We kept receiving a bill. I kept telling the hospital they needed to contact Hartford.

Finally, the bills quit coming and was relieved that they finally had it straightened out. UNTIL we filed our STATE Taxes and found that the HOSPITAL garnished their $125 from it.

When States allow hospitals to automatically garnish, as does SC, with NO accoutability board or defense for the garnishee...there is something wrong.
