Validation Question

I received a call from a CA who said they just purchased an old debt and wanted me to settle. I got off the phone with them and faxed/mailed a Validation letter immediately.

My question is in regards to the 5-day rule that they must send me something in writing after the initial contact, informing me of the debt and my right to dispute. If I sent a validation letter after the initial call, but before they sent out the written notice, is this a violation of FDCPA if I don't get the notice? Or since I already sent the validation letter, would the written notice be seen as continued collection activity. In other words, is the fact that I have not received anything in writing from them a violation or not?
