These jackasses did the EXACT same thing to me, leaving a supposed 'xxx county case number' on my answering machine. I was a little freaked and going to call the count courthouse when I pulled out their last letter. On it was their INTERNAL reference number .. guess what, that was the EXACT number they referred to as a 'case number' !

They're full of crap, do NOT call them back and forget about their ludicrous time limit of 6pm.
NCO is one of the largest..and one of the worst CA's. All they ever do is scream and get nasty.

As for them not identifying themselves on their messages.. again, they're full of crap. They NEVER say 'this is NCO', ever. The law requires that they not leave any message that could be heard by anyone other than you that would identify that they are a collection agency. Who would know who "NCO" was if they never say 'collection agency' ?? So.. they're blowing smoke up your skirt-- and everyone elses for that matter. They like to try to buffalo you with 'law talk' when they really don't know squat.

I received that 'case number' message about 2 months ago.. and I have NOT heard anything more from them except a totally ridiculous settlement offer to pay 90%.. in their dreams !!

Don't call them, don't talk to them. Record their violations - this 'case number' crap is a deception on their part, and 'unconcionable practice' and violation of the FDCPA. Any REASONABLE person would think its a REAL lawsuit.. when it clearly is NOT.. and that is the basis of the violation. You can sue them for it.. so keep the evidence !
