debt from overseas (England)

I've moved to Calif. from England where I have an outstanding Amex bill. No doubt my credit there is tarnished as a result. Recently, I was contacted by a collection agency here for that payment, can they ruin my credit here in the US as well as I'm still not in a postion to pay? Can you point me to any sites or publications as to my options?
