interest on a charged off credit card

can a company (cap one) charge interest on a credit card that has been charged off? amount was charged off july 23, 1997. account was last paid on nov 7, 1996. the remaining balance was 181.93 as of nov 7 and the amount charged off was 542.27. they are saying the current balance as of may 6, 2003 is 1,207.07. "due to the status of your account, interest is assessed daily" was one of their statements!
what should we do? if i am not mistaken, the last letter i sent them was the sol.
the app was sent in 5/96 and the address she gave them at the time was in tenn. thanks, duke
