Hi, Why Chat, we seem to be near the end of our nightmare. I have written for advice several times this past year, and received wonderful help from you. I am the one with a disabled husband on SSI, and a judgment (default) which expires the end of this month. All our other debts are past the SOL. I live in Missouri.

My question is about what to do next... We were hoping that the attorney who represents the CA would not renew the judgment on me. This judgment is only on me, so our house is safe. We have nothing else of value. The three years is up at the end of this month. Before I knew about this forum, two years ago, I received a letter from this attorney saying in effect, "Ignoring this debt will NOT make it go away....etc, etc." I wrote back and told them of our situation saying no equity, no assets, husband on SSI never expected to get better, and I couldn't understand why they even bothered to get a judgment. Of course now I know I could have asked for validation and so on, but I hadn't a clue. I never signed an application, so probably could have avoided this judgment. Oh, well, hindsight is easy.

Anyway, after writing to them, I haven't heard from them in two years. (They were sending reminders every two or three months up until then). Now I have received this letter from them today, (same kind of letter as two years ago), to submit monthly payments or offer a lump sum settlement. The amount has risen to a little over 8,000. Do you think that I should respond to this? I am hoping it is just their last effort to collect because they will not bother filing for renewal by May 31st. I would think that if they planned to renew this judgment, they would have said something like..."to avoid renewal of this judgment, etc.". But nothing was mentioned about the judgment expiring. What is your opinion as to whether you think that they will renew this judgment? Is there anything I can do at this point that could make them not renew, other than paying, which we can't? I never did check my credit report, which I think was a good choice. And I did the Opt-out thing. I just can't decide if it is better that I should respond or ignore them.

Thank you for taking the time for me, and for all your help in the past. It is difficult to be in our senior years and still be struggling with these kinds of problems, as if just staying alive and sane weren't enough! It is wonderful to know that there still are people out there who care enough to make a difference for people like us, and for the millions of suffering animals as well through your website.

Thanks,
Barbara
