My credit problem. Help please!

In 1997, I applied for a Macy retail card. But I used
a temporary address -- I was living in a temporary
place. I used the card once and spent $67. In 1999, I received a collection notice and I paid to
the collection agency immediately. (The agency let me
pay to them rather than Macy.) In 2003, Macy reported to Equifax saying that "paid
charge off". Then my credit becomes bad. What can I do about this? Thanks a lot.
