How long can a CA report consumer disputes to CRA?

I have posted this questions on a few boards without any answer. How long can a collection agency continue to report Consumer Disputes to the CRA's I have searched the laws to no avail. I mean at some point they have to prove the debt right? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
