They can continue to note it as in dispute as long as they want to. However, they do NOT have to validate the debt. They can, and often do, just resell the debt to another CA w/o ever having to prove anything to you. They simply walk away from it and, in the process, they should also remove their entries from your CR as they are no longer the collectors.
