See if it is out of stats. Great! Then pay it. I am not arguing or insulting you or getting ugly but it is his debt that he agreed to pay to the credit card company and he needs to take care of it. I know you think, "Oh this person is a collector so they are automatically wrong." I am actually coming to from a moral standpoint. My dad always says, "Play by the rules and you win every time." It is true.
