RE:past due discreprancy being added back to credit report

Due to an unfortunate problem my husband and I let our car go back since I was the victim of a crime in it and did not want to see it anymore or drive it. This resulted in the obvious bad credit. We knew this. Our problem is now after five years a creditor has re put this back on our credit report showing current and showing it as if we still have the car and are just behind on payments of about 3,000. My question is what can I do? We are inexperienced in this and it is affecting everything with us. Any help would be appreciated so much. Thank you in advance.
