"Phil" is mistaken.

Once your name is on an account, the only way it can be removed is with the permission of the creditor.

If you (1)default on the account,or (2) declare BK, the co-signer will have in the 1st case the derogatory information on his report, and in the 2nd case, the total responsibiity for the debt.
