In my opinion, the most effective way to stop this is to send a dispute without the copy of your letter. That will force them to validate the debt. Either way, you win. If they send you written confirmation that the debt is invalid, they can't pass it on to another collection agency or you can come back at them with their own written proof that they sold a debt knowing it to be invalid. If the debt is validated, you can THEN send them a copy of the letter that you have and ask how the debt could possibly have been validated. Follow up with an offer to settle for...$1000?? with whoever validated the debt. Just "food for thought", not intended to be legal advice.
