denying student loan!!! HELP!!

Any help is welcomed! My husband is going into 4th semester in medical school, and is being denied Salliemae student loans because of his credit. An old Sears account "will not" be shown as 'paid' on his CR per Sears, because it was "settled, and not paid in full". Then, we paid another old debt via a collection agency for a Wells Fargo credit debt, and they havent notified the agencies of this 'paid' account either. We have no hope of a co-borrower for his education loans, and no one seems to give a flip that his future is at stake. Do we have any chance of fixing anything, quickly? These old debts were paid at the beginning of February of this year. I've filed "research request forms" with the credit agencies, so they can learn that these debts were paid, to no avail. I've called Sears and Wells Fargo numerous times, with no help. Please respond! Thank you for your time.
